South African
Phumi Maduna is a seasoned vocalist with a rich musical journey rooted in resilience and passion. Born in Newcastle, South Africa, as the youngest of seven children, Phumi has overcome deep personal loss, including the passing of her parents, her only sister, and two brothers. Despite the challenges, she found strength in music—a passion that began in school concerts and grew into a lifelong career.
Encouraged by her late mother, a dedicated teacher who valued education above all else, Phumi was determined to prove that music could be a meaningful and respected path. She began performing in stage productions by Sam Mhangwana, including Mother-in-Law, Unfaithful Woman, and Thembi, before being cast in Gibson Kente’s celebrated musical Hungry Spoon, where she performed alongside the legendary Brenda Fassie for two years.
Phumi and Brenda later joined the band Amakhowa (The Mushrooms), before eventually pursuing solo careers. Phumi’s dynamic stage presence led her to work with the iconic Soul Brothers as a curtain-raiser and later as a member of the group JAWS.
Today, Phumi Maduna is known for her powerful voice, expressive performances, and deep connection to South Africa’s musical heritage. Her career is a testament to perseverance, talent, and the transformative power of music.
