Few groups can claim to have changed the course of music history. The Marvelettes did exactly that.
As the first Motown act to achieve a Billboard No. 1 single, The Marvelettes paved the way for an extraordinary generation of artists that would soon make Motown a global phenomenon. Their groundbreaking hit Please Mr. Postman, released in 1961, not only became an instant classic but also established the unmistakable Motown sound that continues to inspire audiences around the world.
Formed by five high school friends from Inkster, Michigan, the group quickly became one of Motown's defining acts, producing an extraordinary catalogue of timeless recordings. Alongside Please Mr. Postman, audiences fell in love with unforgettable classics including Don't Mess with Bill, Beechwood 4-5789, The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game, Too Many Fish in the Sea, and My Baby Must Be a Magician. Their recordings earned million-selling Gold Records and secured their place among the most influential female vocal groups in American music history.
Their contribution to music has been recognised through numerous honours, including induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame, and the prestigious Pioneer Award from the R&B Foundation.
Determined to preserve the group's remarkable legacy, original member and trademark holder Katherine "Kat" Anderson Schaffner reformed The Marvelettes in 2016 with a new generation of exceptional performers. Following Katherine's passing in 2023, the group continues with the blessing of her estate, proudly performing under the official Marvelettes trademark and ensuring that one of Motown's greatest legacies continues for audiences around the world.
Today, The Marvelettes celebrate the elegance, harmony and timeless appeal that made them pioneers of the Motown movement. Their performances honour the original members while introducing these iconic songs to new generations of music lovers.
From theatres and performing arts centres to festivals, cruise lines and special events, The Marvelettes continue to deliver an authentic celebration of one of popular music's most influential vocal groups.
